Mike Bibby Truly Wants to Win and I Believe Him

February 28, 2011 Leave a comment

How refreshing!

Hearing athletes state their undying passion for winning has evolved into one of the most overused clichés in sports. You hear it all the time. “I just want to go somewhere and win.” Sure, it sounds great, but who is willing to give up guaranteed dough for that opportunity to win? Well, Mike Bibby just has.

Bibby was bought out of the final year of his contract by the Washington Wizards, days after being acquired from the Atlanta Hawks for Kirk Hinrich in a multiplayer deal. Bibby was set to earn $6.2M next season and forfeited that guaranteed payday in exchange for his freedom today.

Once Bibby clears waivers on Wednesday, he will be free to sign with any team. He’s reportedly looking at the Miami Heat, LA Lakers, and other title contenders. No word yet on if San Antonio would be interested with today’s news regarding Tony Parker’s strained calf. Parker will be out 2-4 weeks.

While the on-court impact of Bibby’s decision is interesting, it’s the financial aspect off the court that is fascinating. By forfeiting his final year on a guaranteed contract, Bibby is doing something that hardly ever happens with athletes. Obviously, Bibby hadn’t spent enough time in D.C. to know how things work there. In our country’s capital, it’s all about greed and sticking your hand out for more. Both in sports and in the governmental bureaucracy that is Washington, D.C.

Fellow D.C. pro athlete, Albert Haynesworth, has been embroiled in a battle of wills with the Redskins and their coach, Mike Shanahan. Clearly the Redskins would like to be rid of the troublesome Haynesworth and the large financial commitment still owed to him. But the Redskins paid Haynesworth $32M in the first 13 months of the deal and a total of $41M is guaranteed to him.

Haynesworth continues to badger the Redskins into releasing him so he can pursue another big payday and play in a system that might utilize his talent better. But Albert doesn’t want to give up anything to get his freedom. Undoubtedly, the Redskins would like something to show for the incredible financial investment that they have committed to Haynesworth and feel that a resolution to their relationship should be mutually beneficial to both sides.

But in this day and age of $100K bar tabs, million dollar Vegas weekends, 5-figure party girls, and untold child support payments (hello Antonio Cromartie), today’s entitled athletes NEVER leave a penny on the table that can be wasted on frivolity later.  Mike Bibby just proved to be the exception to that rule. Don’t expect to see this aberration again soon.

It's a Cinderella story

Mid Major Basketball Overview February 28

Team Overviews: Records are going into February 28th. RPI is courtesy of rpiforecast.com.

Current NCAA Locks:

George Mason Patriots RPI 25

  • 25-5, 16-2 in CAA   Away: 10-3
  • OOC rundown: 9-3 – Wins: Harvard, Duquesne, and Northern Iowa. Losses: NC State, Wofford, and Dayton. They also have 4 gimme wins. RPI 37, schedule 81.
  • CAA Wins: UNCW, Del, at NE, GSU, Drex, at JMU, at Del, Tow, at W&M, Hof, ODU, at UNCW, JMU, at VCU, NE, at GSU    Losses: at Hof, at ODU
  • The Patriots are a lock. They are in even if they lose their opening CAA tournament game. The Pats can climb into a single digit seed with at least 1 more win. The Patriots could make a solid case for a 5 or 6 seed if they win the CAA tournament.

Old Dominion Monarchs RPI 27

  • 24-6, 14-4 in CAA   Away: 7-4
  • OOC rundown: 10-2 – Wins: Clemson, Xavier, Richmond, Dayton, and Cleveland State. Losses: Georgetown and Missouri. They also have 4 gimme wins. RPI 13, schedule 15.
  • CAA Wins: at Tow, NE, GM, at Hof, JMU, UNCW, at GSU, Tow, Del, at W&M, at VCU, GSU, at JMU, W&M  Losses: at Del, at Drex, VCU, at GM
  • The Monarchs are probably a lock as well, but need to win their opener in the CAA tournament to be sure. If they win the CAA tournament, they can move all the way to as high as a 6 seed.

Bubble Territory:

Memphis Tigers RPI 33

  • 21-8, 9-5 in CUSA  Away: 4-5
  • OOC rundown: 12-3 – Wins: Miami (FL) and Gonzaga. Losses: Kansas, Georgetown, and Tennessee. They also have 5 gimme wins. RPI 63, schedule 119.
  • CUSA Wins: ECU, Mar, at USM, at UAB, UCF, at UCF, USM, UAB, Hou    Losses: at SMU, at Mar, Tuls, at Rice, at UTEP
  • Do the Tigers want to be an at-large? Horrible blowout loss to UTEP after losing to Rice last week. The only thing saving them is the atrocious bubble. The Tigers need to win at least 3 more games to be safe on Selection Sunday.

UAB Blazers RPI 32

  • 20-7, 10-4 in CUSA  Away: 8-5
  • OOC rundown: 10-3 – Wins: Arkansas and VCU. Losses: Arizona State, Georgia, and Duke. They also have 6 gimme wins. RPI 52, schedule 165.
  • CUSA Wins: UTEP, at ECU, SMU, Mar, at UCF, at Tula, at Mar, Rice, UCF, at Hou   Losses: at Tuls, Mem, USM, at Mem
  • The Blazers need to win at least 3 games to be safe on Selection Sunday. Don’t like the Blazers OOC profile, but somebody has to get in.

Utah State Aggies RPI 18

  • 26-3, 13-1 in WAC  Away: 9-3
  • OOC rundown: 13-2 – Wins: St. Mary’s. Losses: at BYU, at Georgetown. They also have 9 gimme wins and 1 non division I win. RPI 16, schedule 98.
  • The Aggies got the solid win at St Mary’s and are now a legit at-large candidate. But they can’t lose until the WAC final to ensure that at-large.

Needs To Get Hot:

Saint Mary’s Gaels RPI 49

  • 23-7, 11-3 in WCC  Away: 7-4
  • OOC rundown: 12-4 – Wins: St. John’s. Losses: San Diego State, BYU, Vanderbilt, and Utah State. They also have 3 gimme wins and Weber State remaining. RPI 43, schedule 38.
  • WCC Wins: at LMU, at Pep, USF, SC, USD, at Gon, Pep, LMU, at SC, at USF, Port   Losses: at Port, at USD, Gon
  • The Gaels need make the WCC finals to have a chance on Selection Sunday. Even with the bad bubble, a loss in their WCC tournament opening game will do them in.

Missouri State Bears RPI 41

  • 23-7, 15-3 in MVC  Away: 7-6
  • OOC rundown: 8-4 – Wins: No notables. Losses: Tennessee, Tulsa, Oklahoma State, and Valparaiso. They also have 4 gimme wins. RPI 92, schedule 170.
  • MVC Wins: at UNI, Ill St, at Cre, Evan, at Wich St, S Ill, at Brad, Cre, at Dra, Ind St, Brad, Ill St, Dra  Losses: at Ind St, UNI, at Evan
  • The bubble is a mess, but the only way the Bears get considered is if they win out and loses in the Valley tournament final. Even then, they probably haven’t done enough.

Gonzaga Bulldogs RPI 64

  • 21-9, 11-3 in WCC  Away: 7-5
  • OOC rundown: 10-6 – Wins: Marquette, Baylor, Xavier, and Oklahoma State. Losses: San Diego State, Kansas State, Illinois, Washington State, Notre Dame, and Memphis. They also have 3 gimme wins and one non division I win and a remaining game with Cal State Bakersfield. RPI 77, schedule 24.
  • WCC Wins: Port, Pep, LMU, USD, at Port, LMU, at Pepp, SCU, USF, at SMC, at USD    Losses: at SCU, at USF, SMC
  • The Bulldogs can only get an at-large if they lose to St. Mary’s in the WCC tournament finals. Losing in the semi-finals would be a critical blow to their hopes.

Butler Bulldogs RPI 45

  • 21-9, 13-5 in HOR  Away: 6-6
  • OOC rundown: 8-4 – Wins: Stanford, Washington State, and Florida State. Losses: Louisville, Evansville, Duke, and Xavier. They also have 1 gimme win and a non division I win. RPI 31, schedule 9.
  • HOR Wins: at Loy, Valp, CSU, YSU, at Det, UWGB, at CSU, UIC, WSU, Det, at UWGB, at UIC, Loy  Losses: at UWM, at WSU, UWM, at Val, at YSU
  • The Bulldogs seven game winning streak to end the regular season has to help. Their RPI is high, but they probably have to make the Horizon finals to be an at-large. Last year could help them, although it shouldn’t.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles RPI 40

  • 21-7, 9-5 in CUSA  Away: 6-5
  • OOC rundown: 12-2 – Wins: at South Florida and at Cal. Losses: at Mississippi, Colorado State. They also have 5 gimme wins and two non division I wins. RPI 71, schedule 230.
  • CUSA Wins: Hou, at Rice, UCF, at ECU, Tula, at UAB, Mar, UTEP, ECU  Losses: at Mar, Mem, at SMU, Mem, at UCF
  • The Eagles need to win make the CUSA finals to have a chance on Selection Sunday.

Cleveland State Vikings RPI 38

  • 24-7, 13-5 in HOR  Away: 9-5
  • OOC rundown: 11-2 – Wins: No notable wins. Losses: West Virginia and Old Dominion. They also have 3 gimme wins. RPI 14, schedule 52.
  • HOR Wins: at UWGB, at UWM, Loy, UIC, at YSU, Det, WSU, at UIC, at Loy, Val, YSU, at WSU, UWGB  Losses: at But, at Val, But, at Det, UWM
  • Great RPI, but who have they beaten? It’s possible, but not probable, that an appearance in the Horizon tournament finals would be enough.

Virginia Commonwealth Rams RPI 65

  • 21-10, 12-6 in CAA  Away: 8-6
  • OOC rundown: 9-4 – Wins: UCLA and Wichita State. Losses: Tennessee, South Florida, Richmond, and UAB. They also have 5 gimme wins. RPI 62, schedule 113.
  • CAA Wins: W&M, Drex, at UNCW, at W&M, NE, GSU, at ODU, at Tow, Hof, UNCW, at JMU, at Del   Losses: at GSU, at NE, ODU, GMU, at Drex, JMU
  • The Rams have to make the CAA tournament finals and hope for the best to get an at-large. Ending Mason’s winning streak could help their chances.

Texas-El Paso Miners RPI 70

  • 21-8, 9-5 in CUSA  Away: 4-5
  • OOC rundown: 12-3 – Wins: Michigan. Losses: Pacific, Georgia Tech, and BYU. They also have 5 gimme wins and a non division I win. RPI 83, schedule 172.
  • CUSA Wins: Tuls, at Tula, Rice, at Hou, Tula, at Rice, SMU, Hou, Mem   Losses: at UAB, at Tuls, at USM, UCF, at ECU
  • That loss to ECU might have finished them off for an at-large. They still might have a chance for an at-large if they run the table and lose in the CUSA finals. Maybe the Michigan win will be enough.

Marshall Thundering Herd RPI 55

  • 20-9, 8-6 in CUSA  Away: 6-6
  • OOC rundown: 12-3 – Wins: West Virginia. Losses: Chattanooga, at Louisville, at James Madison. They also have 6 gimme wins and two non division I wins. RPI 64, schedule 155.
  • CUSA Wins: USM, Mem, at Hou, at ECU, Rice, at Tula, Tuls, SMU   Losses: at UCF, at Mem, ECU, at UAB, at USM, UAB
  • The Herd needs to win at out and lose in the CUSA final to be safe on Selection Sunday. The win over West Virginia could be the difference for them.

Wichita State Shockers RPI 53

  • 23-7, 14-4 in MVC  Away: 9-2
  • OOC rundown: 9-3 – Wins: Virginia and Tulsa. Losses: Connecticut, San Diego State, and Virginia Commonwealth. They also have 4 gimme wins and non division I win over Chaminade. RPI 73, schedule 88.
  • MVC Wins: Evan, at Brad, Dra, at Ill St, at Cre, at Dra, Ind St, at S Ill, Brad, at Ind St, Ill St, at UNI, at Evan, Cre     Losses: Mizz St, UNI, S Ill, at Mizz St
  • The Shockers can only make themselves a bubble team by losing in the MVC finals. Maybe the committee gives them credit for solid OOC losses, because they don’t have any great wins this season.

Keeping an eye on:

Harvard (Ivy) RPI 44 21-5/10-2: Harvard could finish behind Princeton and earn the Ivy’s first at-large bid ever. Princeton’s loss to Brown could change this. Wins over BC and Colorado make them a legitimate at-large prospect if they finish behind the Tigers. The Crimson are only here because of the atrocious bubble situation.

That’s this week’s Mid Major overview. This will be updated next week.

ACC Basketball Overview February 28

Team Overviews: Records are going into February 28th. RPI is courtesy of rpiforecast.com.

Current NCAA Locks:

Duke Blue Devils RPI 5

  • 26-3, 12-2 in ACC   Away: 8-3
  • OOC rundown: 14-1 with wins against Marquette, Kansas State, Michigan State, Butler, UAB , and Temple and a loss to St John’s. They also have 5 gimme wins. RPI 8, schedule 45.
  • ACC Wins: Mia, Mary, UVA, at NC St, at WF, BC, at Mary, NC St, UNC, at Mia, at UVa, GT      Losses: at FSU, at VT
  • The Devils might have to run the table to claim a #1 seed. They have some nice wins, but lost their only OOC game against a top 25 RPI team (St John’s). They need to win at least 3 more games to be a 2 seed.

North Carolina Tar Heels RPI 10

  • 22-6, 12-2 in ACC   Away: 7-3
  • OOC rundown: 10-4 with a good win over Kentucky and losses to Minnesota, Vanderbilt, Illinois, and Texas. They also have 5 gimme wins. RPI 26, schedule 20.
  • ACC Wins: at UVa, VT, Clem, at Mia, NC St, at BC, FSU, at Clem, WF, BC, at NC St, Mary     Losses: at GT, at Duke
  • The Heels need at least 2 more wins to get a Sweet 16 seed. They can climb to as high as a 2 seed if they run the table. Winning at least 3 more games would give them a shot at a 3 seed, although it will probably take 4 more wins.

Bubble Territory:

Florida State Seminoles RPI 47

  • 20-8, 10-4 in ACC   Away: 7-5
  • OOC rundown: 10-4 with a win over Baylor and losses to Florida, Ohio State, Butler and a horrible loss to Auburn. They also have 9 gimme wins. RPI 117, schedule 210.
  • ACC Wins: Clem, Duke, NC St, at Mia, BC, WF, at GT, UVa, at WF, Mia   Losses: at VT, at Clem, at UNC, at Mary
  • The Noles need to win at least 2 more games to be safe on Selection Sunday. That’s going to be tough without Singleton. Getting the bye might actually hurt them for those 2 wins.

Virginia Tech Hokies RPI 55

  • 19-8, 9-5 in ACC   Away: 6-5
  • OOC rundown: 10-3 with notable wins against Oklahoma State and Penn State and losses to Kansas State, UNLV, and Purdue. They also have 6 gimme wins. RPI 77, schedule 156.
  • ACC Wins: FSU, WF, at Mary, Mia, at NC St, GT, Mary, at WF, Duke  Losses: UVa, at UNC, at GT, at BC, at UVA
  • The Hokies need to win at least 2 more games to be safe on Selection Sunday. Getting only one win puts them in their annual bubble spot.

Boston College Eagles RPI 46

  • 17-11, 7-7 in ACC   Away: 3-6
  • OOC rundown: 10-4 with a good win over Texas A&M and a solid losses to Wisconsin and Harvard with strange ones to Yale and Rhode Island. They also have 3 gimme wins. RPI 55, schedule 41.
  • ACC Wins: at Mary, GT, NC St, UVa, VT, Mary, at UVa   Losses: at Mia, at FSU, at Duke, UNC, at Clem, at UNC, Mia
  • The Eagles need to win at least 3 more games to be safe on Selection Sunday. Their OOC profile gets worse by the day.

Clemson Tigers RPI 69

  • 19-9, 8-6 in ACC   Away: 3-6
  • OOC rundown: 11-3 with no good wins and losses to Old Dominion, Michigan, and South Carolina. They also have 6 gimme wins. RPI 97, schedule 214.
  • ACC Wins: Mia, GT, NC St, FSU, at GT, BC, at Mia, WF  Losses: at FSU, at UNC, at Mary, at UVa, UNC, at NC St
  • The Tigers need at least 3 more wins to be safe on Selection Sunday. One caveat, they can probably clinch a spot by winning their two remaining ACC games and avoiding Wake in the first round.

Needs To Get Hot:

Maryland Terrapins RPI 85

  • 18-11, 7-7 in ACC   Away: 4-5
  • OOC rundown: 11-4 with a decent win over Penn State and losses to Pittsburgh, Illinois, Temple, and Villanova. They also have 9 gimme wins. RPI 99, schedule 171.
  • ACC Wins: at WF, Clem, at UVa, at GT, WF, NC St, FSU   Losses: BC, at Duke, VT, Duke, at BC, at VT, at UNC
  • The only scenario where the Terps could get an at-large would be running the table and losing in the ACC finals while beating Duke along the way. Got that?

Miami Hurricanes RPI 68

  • 17-12, 5-9 in ACC   Away: 4-7
  • OOC rundown: 12-3 with a good win over West Virginia and losses to Memphis, Rutgers and Central Florida. They also have 6 gimme wins. RPI 47, schedule 141.
  • ACC Wins: BC, GT, UVa, WF, at BC     Losses: at Duke, at Clem, FSU, at NC St, UNC, at VT, Duke, Clem, at FSU
  • The horrible bubble keeps the ‘Canes alive. They need to win their final 2 ACC games and win at least two in Greensboro to be safe. Yuck.

Better Win the Conference Tournament:

North Carolina State Wolfpack RPI 103

  • 15-13, 5-9 in ACC
  • OOC rundown: 10-4 with a win over George Mason and losses to Georgetown, Wisconsin, Syracuse, and Arizona. They also have 8 gimme wins. RPI 101, schedule 164.
  • The Sidney Lowe watch has begun.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets RPI 181

  • 11-17, 3-11 in ACC
  • OOC rundown: 8-6 with a win over Richmond and a bunch of losses. They also have 6 gimme wins. RPI 163, schedule 177.
  • How many more down years does Hewitt get? 2004 is a long time ago in hoop years.

Virginia Cavaliers RPI 147

  • 14-14, 5-9 in ACC
  • OOC rundown: 9-5 with a good win over Minnesota and a horrific loss to Seattle. They also have 5 gimme wins. RPI 212, schedule 289.
  • The Cavs are going to ruin one or two of their ACC mates’ seasons. Hello Va Tech. Anybody else want some?

Wake Forest Demon Deacons RPI 252

  • 8-21, 1-13 in ACC
  • OOC rundown: 7-8 with no good wins and plenty of losses, both good and bad. They also have 7 gimme wins. RPI 271, schedule 258.
  • When did the Deacons turn into Fordham? The A-10 invite is forthcoming.

That’s this week’s ACC overview. This will be updated next week.

Road to Selection Sunday for Feb 28

February 28, 2011 Leave a comment

The Irish are still alive in the Big East title race

Welcome to the Road to Selection Sunday for Feb 28

News and Notes:

Notre Dame needs Villanova to split their games this week, but make sure Nova loses in South Bend.

The Temple students held a mock funeral for the Saint Joe’s Hawk during their recent game last week.

Kansas State is finally playing up to their potential and “The Beard” could win Big 12 POY.

It’s Senior Night in Austin and the Longhorns are looking to regain their dominating form.

Weekend Winners:

Syracuse: Good win for the Orange avenging their loss to the Hoyas in the Dome. Outside of their lack of OOC road games, the profile for the Orange is pretty good.

Missouri State: The Bears got their first ever MVC regular season title on Saturday. They’re probably going to have to beat the Shockers again to get the automatic bid.

Brigham Young: The Cougars won a very entertaining game on Saturday and looked pretty dominant in doing so. The Jimmer showed that he can make his teammates better with some good passing as he dished 9 assists. With the other upsets this weekend, the Cougars look safely in as a 1 seed if today was Selection Sunday. They might even be able to lose to SDSU or UNLV in the MWC tournament final and get a 1 seed, depending on how many other contenders lose again.

St. John’s: There aren’t many teams playing better than the Johnnies right now. They’ve won 6 straight and 8 of 9 as they are beginning to look like national championship contenders. Dwight Hardy scored 34 and looks to be ripping the BE POY award away from Walker and Hansbrough. Lavin has to be top 3 in the BE COY race with Mike Brey and Rick Pitino.

Colorado: The Buffs charged back into the bubble picture with their big comeback win against the Longhorns. Down 22, the Buffs came back on the strength of 58 second half points. Alec Burks was sensational, going for 33 points and getting 10 boards. The Buffs need to continue winning as their profile is fairly weak outside of the Texas win and Kansas State sweep.

Michigan: The Wolverines won the “elimination” game with the Gophers and are now have a solid chance of capturing an at-large bid. Once 1-6 in the Big Ten, the Maize and Blue are now 8-9 with Sparty coming to town on Saturday. A win and they are in.

Virginia Tech: The Hokies got the big win that they desperately needed on Saturday night behind a big game from Jeff Allen who had 18 and 15. Good thing too, because Malcolm Delaney was AWOL for most of the night. In typical Tech fashion, they will probably split their next two games and drop their opener in the ACC tournament to make their selection difficult. But right now, they’re probably in.

Connecticut: Big road win for the Huskies after dropping the game against Marquette on Thursday. The Huskies are now in a five-way tie for seventh place in the Big East. No kidding. The two teams that break out get one bye in the Big East tournament. The Huskies got 39 points out of freshmen Lamb, Smith, and Napier. Not too bad. This team is probably a year from being great. If Walker returns, they are preseason #1 for next season.

Louisville: Except for the male cheerleader, of course. The Cards got a huge win over the Panthers yesterday and are looking good for a Sweet 16 seed in two weeks. That was just a gutty win over a tough team. It’s not too often that you are victorious when shooting 34%.

Losers:

Bubble teams with bad losses group: Here they are: Miami, Memphis, Alabama, Minnesota, Cincinnati, Colorado State, and Dayton. All of these teams could have taken steps to get into the tournament or at least keep their hopes alive. Only the atrocious bubble situation keeps some of them alive.

Georgetown: The loss of Chris Wright hurts, but the Hoyas have to defend the home turf. By losing at home to the ‘Cuse, the Hoyas split the season series and are now only one win in front of the 9-7 cluster in the Big East standings. They probably need to win in Cincinnati to get a round 1 bye and to keep their Sweet 16 seed hopes alive.

Missouri: The Tigers can’t win on the road. They lost to K-State on Saturday even though Jacob Pullen was saddled with foul problems. They only have 2 road wins all season and with a loss to the Huskers, they will have to beat Kansas to have a winning record in the Big 12.

San Diego State: The Aztecs lost a chance to win the Mountain West and get into the driver’s seat for a #1 seed. Great environment for the game, but Jimmer and the Cougars were too much from the beginning.

Villanova: The Wildcats are in a tailspin and need to break out of their funk if they want to get a decent seed on Selection Sunday. The Cats are 5-7 after starting 16-1 and face the top two teams in the conference on the road to finish the regular season. It’s not out of the question that they lose both and head into the BE tournament at 5-9 after their great start. They could be headed towards a double digit seed if they lose their next 3 games.

Arizona: These Wildcats dropped a golden opportunity to close out the Pac 10 by losing to USC and UCLA last week. Now they need help to claim the outright title. Derrick Williams scored 26 against both Washington schools and had NBA draft people talking about him as the #1 pick. In LA, he totaled 23 points in the two games and had to slide on those draft boards. The Cats have also slid down to a 6 or 7 seed at best.

Duke: Say goodbye to that #1 seed. If they lose another one, there will be no way they can recover to get a 1 seed. The Dukies should still be considered a March favorite, however, because Nolan Smith might be the best player in the country and has a very good supporting cast.

Michigan State: The Spartans need wins and beating Purdue would have all but sealed their invitation to the NCAA tournament. Purdue is really good, but losing at home by 20 isn’t the best way to impress. Now they face two teams that have already beaten them and they need to get to at least 18 wins to be a reasonable selection for an at-large.

Bubble Territory:

Illinois Fighting Illini RPI 40

  • 18-11, 8-8 in Big Ten   Away: 4-6
  • OOC rundown: 10-3 with solid wins over Maryland, North Carolina, and Gonzaga with losses to Texas and Missouri. They also have a horrible loss to Illinois-Chicago and 4 gimme wins. RPI 40, schedule 55.

Better Win the Conference Tournament:

Big East Basketball Overview February 27

Team Overviews: Records are going into February 28th. RPI is courtesy of rpiforecast.com.

Current NCAA Locks:

Pittsburgh Panthers RPI 8

  • 25-4, 13-3 in Big East  Away: 6-2
  • OOC rundown: 12-1 with solid wins over Rhode Island, Maryland, and Texas and a solid loss to Tennessee. RPI 19, schedule 93.
  • Big East: Wins: Conn, at PC, Marq, at Gtown, SH, Syr, at Dep, at Rut, Cin, at WVU, at Vill, USF, WVU   Losses: ND, at SJ, at Lou
  • If the Panthers win at least 4 games or more, they should be a #1. Being the best team in the best conference should be worth something.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish RPI 11

  • 23-5, 12-4 in Big East  Away: 4-5
  • OOC rundown: 11-1 with good wins over Georgia, Wisconsin, and Gonzaga with a good loss to Kentucky. RPI 27, schedule 152.
  • Big East: Wins: Gtown, Conn, SJ, Cin, Marq, at Pitt, at Dep, Rut, Lou, at USF, at PC, SH   Losses: at Syr, at Marq, at SJ, at WVU
  • The Irish would have to run the table and win the Big East tournament to claim a #1 seed. More likely is they win another 4 or more and get a 2 seed. If they win at least 3 more they will still get a 3 seed.

Georgetown Hoyas RPI 7

  • 21-8, 10-7 in Big East  Away: 8-4
  • OOC rundown: 11-1 with good wins at Old Dominion, at Missouri, and Utah State. Solid loss to Temple. RPI 1, schedule 3.
  • Big East: Wins: Dep, at Rut, at SH, SJ, at Vill, Lou, PC, at Syr, Marq, at USF   Losses: at ND, at SJ, WVU, Pitt, at Conn, Cin, Syr
  • The Hoyas need to beat Cincinnati and make the Big East tournament finals to be a 2 seed. They need at least 2 more wins to ensure a Sweet 16 seed. Losing without Wright and not getting him back in time for their first NCAA game could affect their seeding.

Connecticut Huskies RPI 20

  • 21-7, 9-7 in Big East  Away: 5-4
  • OOC rundown: 12-0 with good wins over Wichita State, Michigan State, Kentucky, at Texas, and Tennessee. RPI 4, schedule 48.
  • Big East: Wins: USF, Rut, at Dep, Vill, at Marq, at SH, PC, Gtown, at Cin   Losses: at Pitt, at ND, Lou, Syr, at SJ, at Lou, Mar
  • The Huskies probably need to run the table to claim a #2 seed. More likely is that they can win at least 3 more and get at least a 3 seed.

Villanova Wildcats RPI 31

  • 21-8, 9-7 in Big East   Away: 7-3
  • OOC rundown: 12-1 with good wins over Temple and UCLA. RPI 18, schedule 110.
  • Big East: Wins: Rut, at USF, Cin, Lou, at Syr, Marq, WVU, at SH, at Dep   Losses: at Conn, at PC, Gtown, at Rut, Pitt, Syr, SJ
  • The Cats need to win at least 5 more to get a Sweet 16 seed. This tailspin could knock them out of a single digit seed. They probably need at least 2 more wins to get a single digit seed.

Syracuse Orangemen RPI 15

  • 24-6, 11-6 in Big East   Away: 6-3
  • OOC rundown: 13-0 with wins over Michigan and Michigan State. RPI 12, schedule 123.
  • Big East: Wins: PC, ND, at SH, at SJ, Cin, at Conn, at USF, WVU, Rut, at Vill, at Gtown  Losses: at Pitt, Vill, SH, at Marq, Gtown, at Lou
  • The Orange need at least 1 more win to get a 5 or 6 seed and can get a Sweet 16 seed if they win at least 3 more games. It will be interesting to see how the selection committee deals with the Orange having no OOC road games.

Louisville Cardinals RPI 18

  • 22-7, 11-5 in Big East  Away: 4-5
  • OOC rundown: 11-2 with a decent win over Butler and a good win over UNLV with losses to Drexel and Kentucky. RPI 48, schedule 72.
  • Big East: Wins: SH, at USF, Marq, SJ, WVU, at Conn, Dep, Syr, Conn, at Rut, Pit    Losses: Vill, at PC, at Gtown, at ND, at Cin
  • The Cardinals OOC profile isn’t that great so they need at least 3 more wins to get a Sweet 16 seed. The Cards should get a 5-7 seed with at least 1 more win.

West Virginia Mountaineers RPI 21

  • 18-10, 9-7 in Big East  Away: 4-6
  • OOC rundown: 9-3 with solid wins over Purdue, Vanderbilt and Cleveland St and losses to Minnesota, Miami (FL), and Marshall. RPI 8, schedule 2.
  • Big East: Wins: at Dep, at Gtown, PC, USF, at Cin, SH, Dep, ND, at Rut   Losses: SJ, at Marq, at Lou, at Vill, Pit, at Syr, at Pit
  • It’s going to take a solid finish, but the Mountaineers can get a Sweet 16 seed with at least 4 more wins. More likely is a 5-7 seed with at least 2 more wins.

St John’s Redman RPI 13

  • 19-9, 11-5 in Big East  Away: 5-6
  • OOC rundown: 8-4 with a win over Duke, but they lost to St Mary’s, St Bonaventure, Fordham, and UCLA. RPI 55, schedule 52.
  • Big East: Wins: at WVU, at PC, Gtown, ND, Rut, Conn, at Cin, at Mar, Pit, Dep, at Vill   Losses: at ND, Syr, at Lou, Cin, at Gtown
  • The Johnnies have now won 6 straight and 8 of 9. They should clinch a single digit seed with their next win and could challenge for a Sweet 16 seed if they win at least 3 more games. They have a longshot chance of getting to a 3 seed if they win out, including the Big East tournament.

Bubble Territory:

Cincinnati Bearcats RPI 39

  • 22-7, 9-7 in Big East  Away: 7-4
  • OOC rundown: 13-0 with blowout wins over Dayton and Xavier and 7 gimmes. RPI 38, schedule 281.
  • Big East: Wins: Dep, SH, USF, at SJ, Rut, at Dep, Lou, at PC, at Gtown     Losses: at Vill, at Syr, at ND, WVU, at Pitt, SJ, Conn
  • The Bearcats still aren’t there yet. The Bearcats need at least 1 more win to be safe on Selection Sunday. If they win at least 2 more games, they can get a single digit seed.

Marquette Warriors RPI 52

  • 18-11, 9-7 in Big East  Away: 4-6
  • OOC rundown: 9-4 with no notable wins and losses to Duke, Gonzaga, Wisconsin, and Vanderbilt. RPI 124, schedule 175.
  • Big East: Wins: WVU, at Rut, ND, Dep, Syr, at USF, SH, at Conn, PC   Losses: at Pitt, at Lou, at ND, Conn, at Vill, at Gtown, SJ
  • Marquette needs at least 2 more wins to be safe on Selection Sunday. Anything  less puts them squarely on the bubble.

Better Win the Conference Tournament:

Rutgers Scarlet Knights RPI 120

  • 13-15, 4-12 in Big East
  • OOC rundown: 9-3 with a good win over Miami (FL) and a decent loss to North Carolina and bad losses to Princeton and St. Joseph’s. RPI 98, schedule 232.
  • The Scarlet Knights now need to win the Big East tournament.

Providence Friars RPI 149

  • 14-15, 3-13 in Big East
  • OOC rundown: 11-2 with a solid win over URI and a decent loss to BC. RPI 80, schedule 237.
  • If they end up with an 8-10 Big East record or better and win more than one game in MSG, then we’ll talk. So I’m saying they have a chance.

Seton Hall Pirates RPI 100

  • 11-17, 5-11 in Big East
  • OOC rundown: 6-6 with no good wins and plenty of solid losses. RPI 121, schedule 29.
  • Their losing record shouldn’t turn off the CBI committee.

South Florida Bulls RPI 160

  • 9-20, 3-13 in Big East
  • OOC rundown: 6-7 with a win over VCU and plenty of losses. RPI 132, schedule 31.
  • Not this year.

DePaul Blue Demons RPI 229

  • 7-21, 1-15 in Big East
  • OOC rundown: 6-6 with no good wins and plenty of bad losses. RPI 253, schedule 235.
  • Wait til next year.

That’s this week’s Big East overview. This will be updated next week.

SEC Basketball Overview February 27

Team Overviews: Records are going into February 28th. RPI is courtesy of rpiforecast.com.

Current NCAA Locks:

Florida Gators RPI 12

  • 22-6, 11-3 in SEC  Away: 8-3
  • OOC rundown: 11-3 with wins over Florida State, Kansas State, and Xavier and losses to Ohio St, UCF, and Jacksonville. They also have 4 gimmes. RPI 15, schedule 7.
  • SEC Wins: Miss, at Tenn, at Aub, Ark, at UGa, Van, UK, at USC, Tenn, at LSU, UGa   Losses: USC, at MSU, at UK
  • The Gators need at least 3 more wins to secure a Sweet 16 seed.

Kentucky Wildcats RPI 16

  • 20-8, 8-6 in SEC  Away: 3-7
  • OOC rundown: 12-2 with wins over Washington, Notre Dame, and Louisville and losses to Connecticut and North Carolina. They also have 4 gimmes. RPI 9, schedule 16.
  • SEC Wins: Aub, LSU, at USC, UGa, Tenn, MSU, USC, UF     Losses: at UGa, at Ala, at Miss, at UF, at Van, at Ark
  • The Wildcats need to develop some consistency. They need to win at least 4 more games to be considered for a Sweet 16 seed. Their lack of road wins is alarming. They need more.

Vanderbilt Commodores RPI 23

  • 21-7, 9-5 in SEC   Away: 5-4
  • OOC rundown: 11-2 with wins over Nebraska, North Carolina, Marquette, and St Mary’s and losses to West Virginia and Missouri. They also have 6 gimmes. RPI 11, schedule 24.
  • SEC Wins: UGa, Miss, at MSU, USC, Ala, UK, at UGa, Aub, at LSU  Losses: at USC, at Tenn, Ark, at UF, Tenn
  • The Commodores need at least 4 more wins to be considered for a Sweet 16 seed. They need 3 or more wins to get a 5 or 6 seed.

Bubble Territory:

Tennessee Volunteers RPI 38

  • 17-12, 7-7 in SEC  Away: 5-5
  • OOC rundown: 10-4 with wins over Missouri State, Villanova, and Pittsburgh and losses to Oakland, Charlotte, USC, College of Charleston, and UConn. They also have 3 gimmes. RPI 29, schedule 4.
  • SEC Wins: Van, at UGa, LSU, at Miss, at Aub, USC, at Van     Losses: at Ark, UF, Ala, at UK, at UF, UGa, MSU
  • Can we get some consistency out of the Vols? They look like a team that doesn’t survive their first pod in March. They need to win at least 2, if not 3 more games to be secure. With Pearl’s problems with NCAA compliance, they don’t want to be on the bubble.

Georgia Bulldogs RPI 39

  • 19-9, 8-6 in SEC  Away: 7-3
  • OOC rundown: 11-3 with notable wins over Colorado and UAB and losses to Notre Dame, Temple, and Xavier. They also have 6 gimmes. RPI 55, schedule 102.
  • SEC Wins: UK, at Miss, MSU, at Ark, Aub, at USC, at Tenn, USC  Losses: at Van, Tenn, UF, at UK, Van, at UF
  • The Bulldogs need at least 2 more wins to be secure on Selection Sunday. Right now, Kentucky is the only tourney lock team that they’ve beaten.

Alabama Crimson Tide RPI 89

  • 19-9, 11-3 in SEC  Away: 4-6
  • OOC rundown: 8-6 with no good wins and a bad loss to St. Peter’s and 8 gimmes. RPI 228, schedule 279.
  • SEC Wins: at MSU, USC, UK, at Aub, LSU, MSU, at Tenn, Miss, at LSU, Ark, Aub  Losses: at Ark, at Van, at Miss
  • The Tide need to win at least 2 more to get an at-large. Their RPI needs to be in the top 60 to make a convincing argument. Winning at Florida this week would be huge.

Needs To Get Hot:

Ole Miss Rebels RPI 72

  • 18-11, 6-8 in SEC  Away: 4-6
  • OOC rundown: 12-3 with a win over Penn State and losses to Dayton, Miami (FL), and Colorado State. They also have 7 gimmes. RPI 44, schedule 94.
  • SEC Wins: at LSU, UK, at Ark, LSU, Aub, Ala   Losses: at UF, MSU, UGa, at Van, Tenn, at Ala, at MSU, USC
  • The Rebels need to run the table and lose in the SEC tournament final to get an at-large. Too many bad losses and OOC losses to bubble teams.

Better Win the Conference Tournament:

South Carolina Gamecocks RPI 116

  • 14-13, 5-9 in SEC
  • OOC rundown: 9-4 with a win over Clemson and losses to Michigan State, Ohio State, BC, and a questionable loss to Furman. They also have 6 gimmes. RPI 137, schedule 265.
  • The Auburn loss at home is inexcusable and probably knocks them out of at-large consideration. They need to win at least 7 more games to have a chance.

Arkansas Razorbacks RPI 102

  • 18-10, 7-7 in SEC
  • OOC rundown: 10-3 with no notable wins and losses to UAB, Texas A&M, and Texas. They also have 9 gimmes. RPI 107, schedule 227.
  • Here’s guessing that John Pelphrey is going to be unemployed in 2 weeks.

Mississippi State Bulldogs RPI 131

  • 15-13, 7-7 in SEC
  • OOC rundown: 8-6 with no notable wins and plenty of losses. They also have 6 gimmes. RPI 184, schedule 166.
  • The Bulldogs came into the season with tourney hopes, but they have to win the SEC tournament now. That’s how bad their OOC resume is.

Louisiana State Tigers RPI 207

  • 11-18, 2-10 in SEC
  • OOC rundown: 8-7 with no notable wins and plenty of losses. They also have 7 gimmes. RPI 236, schedule 261.
  • They don’t go dancing unless they win the SEC tournament.

Auburn Tigers RPI 274

  • 9-19, 2-12 in SEC
  • OOC rundown: 7-7 with a win over Florida State and a bunch of bad losses. RPI 332, schedule 339.
  • If only they paid their hoops players Newton money…

That’s this week’s SEC overview. This will be updated next week.

Make sure you check in every morning for a review of the previous day’s games on the Road to Selection Sunday.
