Big Ten Basketball Overview March 6

Big Ten Basketball Overview March 6

Team Overviews: Records are going into March 7th. RPI is courtesy of rpiforecast.com.

Current NCAA Locks:

Ohio State Buckeyes RPI 3

  • 29-2, 16-2 in Big Ten    Away: 9-2  Neutral: 0-0
  • OOC rundown: 13-0 with wins over Florida and Florida State. They have 7 gimme wins. RPI 6, schedule 68.
  • Big Ten Wins: at Ind, at Iowa, Minn, at Mich, Penn St, Iowa, at Ill, Purdue, NW, Mich, at Minn, Mich St, Ill, Ind, at Penn St, Wis  Losses: at Wis, at Pur
  • The Buckeyes are a lock #1 seed and can get the top overall seed if they match Kansas this week.

Purdue Boilermakers RPI 7

  • 25-6, 14-4 in Big Ten   Away: 7-5  Neutral: 2-1
  • OOC rundown: 11-2 with solid wins over Virginia Tech and Alabama with losses to Richmond and West Virginia. They had 4 gimme wins. RPI 17, schedule 70.
  • Big Ten Wins: at Mich, NW, at Penn St, Iowa, Penn St, Mich St, Minn, Ind, at Ill, Wis, Ohio St, at Ind, at Mich St, Ill    Losses: at Minn, at Ohio St, at Iowa
  • The Boilers need to get to the Big Ten finals to secure a 2 seed. Winning one game ensures at least a 3 seed. If they lose their only game, it becomes a coin flip between a 3 and 4 seed.

Wisconsin Badgers RPI 13

  • 23-7, 13-5 in Big Ten   Away: 5-6  Neutral: 2-1
  • OOC rundown: 10-2 with wins over BC and Marquette and losses to UNLV and Notre Dame. They also had 5 gimme wins. RPI 33, schedule 111.
  • Big Ten Wins: Minn, Mich, Ill, Ind, at NW, Pur, Mich St, at Iowa, Ohio St, Penn St, at Mich, NW, at Ind   Losses: at Ill, at Mich St, at Penn St, at Pur, at Ohio St
  • The Badgers need to make the Big Ten finals to get a 3 seed and have a long shot chance at a 2 seed if they win the Big Ten tournament by beating Ohio State. They appear to be no worse than a 4 seed, unless they lose to Indiana.

Bubble Territory:

Illinois Fighting Illini RPI 40

  • 19-12, 9-9 in Big Ten   Away: 4-7  Neutral: 1-3
  • OOC rundown: 10-3 with solid wins over Maryland, North Carolina, and Gonzaga with losses to Texas and Missouri. They also have a horrible loss to Illinois-Chicago and 4 gimme wins. RPI 43, schedule 59.
  • Big Ten Wins: at Iowa, Wis, NW, Mich St, Penn St, at Minn, Mich, Iowa, Ind    Losses: at Penn St, at Wis, Ohio St, at Ind, at NW, Pur, at Mich St, at Ohio St, at Pur
  • The Illini need to beat Michigan to be a lock for Selection Sunday. They’re probably in anyway, but you never know. If they win two games, they should be at least a 7 seed. They should be able to get a 6 seed if they win the Big Ten tournament.

Michigan State Spartans RPI 50

  • 17-13, 9-9 in Big Ten   Away: 2-9  Neutral: 2-1
  • OOC rundown: 8-4 with their only good win over Washington, but solid losses to Syracuse, Connecticut, Duke, and Texas. They also have 4 gimme wins and a non-division I win. RPI 67, schedule 21.
  • Big Ten Wins: Minn, at NW, Wis, NW, Ind, Penn St, Ill, at Minn, Iowa   Losses: at Penn St, at Ill, at Pur, Mich, at Iowa, at Wis, at Ohio St, Pur, at Mich
  • The Spartans need to beat Iowa to be safe on Selection Sunday. Beating Purdue would lock it up.

Michigan Wolverines RPI 56

  • 19-12, 9-9 in Big Ten   Away: 5-5  Neutral: 0-2
  • OOC rundown: 10-3 with no good wins, but solid losses to Syracuse and Kansas. They also have 5 gimme wins and a non-division I win. RPI 61, schedule 51.
  • Big Ten Wins: Penn St, at Mich St, Iowa, at Penn St, NW, Ind, at Iowa, at Minn, Mich St    Losses: Pur, at Wis, Ohio St, at Ind, at NW, Minn, at Ohio St, at Ill, Wis
  • The Wolverines need to beat Illinois to be safe on Selection Sunday. The bubble is bad, but they don’t want to try it. If they really want to be a lock, beat Ohio State.

Needs To Get Hot:

Penn State Nittany Lions RPI 54

  • 16-13, 9-9 in Big Ten   Away: 3-8  Neutral: 0-0
  • OOC rundown: 7-4 with a win over Duquesne and losses to Ole Miss, Maryland and Virginia Tech. They also have 3 gimme wins a horrible loss to Maine. RPI 117, schedule 64.
  • Big Ten Wins: at Ind, Mich St, Ill, Iowa, Wis, NW, Minn, at NW, at Minn    Losses: at Mich, Pur, at Ohio St, at Pur, at Ill, Mich, at Mich St, at Wis, Ohio St
  • It’s going to take at least a win over Wisconsin to get the Lions in. Getting to the Big Ten finals would wrap it up.

Better Win the Conference Tournament:

Minnesota Golden Gophers RPI 74

  • 17-13, 6-12 in Big Ten
  • OOC rundown: 11-1 with solid wins over West Virginia and North Carolina. They also have 5 gimme wins. RPI 21, schedule 91.
  • Wow. What a collapse. The Gophers have lost 9 of 10 to end the regular season. Easily the team that collapsed the most during this season.

Northwestern Wildcats RPI 93

  • 17-12, 7-11 in Big Ten
  • OOC rundown: 10-1 with no impressive wins and their loss was to St. John’s. They also have 6 gimme wins. RPI 54, schedule 274.

Iowa Hawkeyes RPI 167

  • 11-19, 4-14 in Big Ten
  • OOC rundown: 7-5 with no good wins. RPI 209, schedule 252.
  • Fran will have this team Dancing within two years.

Road to Selection Sunday for Feb 22

SEC Player of the Year?

Welcome to the Road to Selection Sunday for Feb 22

News and Notes:

Coach Cal had a dubious explanation for not subbing in Saturday’s blowout over South Carolina.

The Illini will need to be successful from long range to win tonight in Columbus.

Kevin Stallings and the Vandy players talk about tonight’s showdown with the Vols.

Bruce Pearl is trying to get the Vols to play better.

The Spartans are still not at 100% as they battle the Gophers tonight in Minneapolis.

The Gophers think that losing Nolen will cost them with the NCAA selection committee next month.

Yesterday’s Winners:

Syracuse: The Orange have been a little inconsistent and needed another good road win. Winning in Philly gives them that and gets them in double digit wins in the Big East. Jardine and Jackson were sensational as they combined for 38 points on 15-20 shooting. If they can continue their winning streak through the Big East tourney, they should be able to work their way into a Sweet 16 seed.

Losers:

Villanova: Home losses are bad no matter how you look at them. The Cats had a pair of close calls last week and now have lost home games to Georgetown, Pitt, and Syracuse. St John’s and the rest of their schedule won’t make things easy on the Wildcats chances for a good seed in March.

Oklahoma State: It’s time to bury the Pokes. Even without their point guard, the Jayhawks easily handled the Cowboys. Even with an abysmal bubble, winning out through to the Big 12 title game might not even be enough now.

UTEP: Because the game was played during the day doesn’t mean it wasn’t a bad loss. The Miners at-large chances took a major hit with the loss to UCF. The Miners might have to win out until the CUSA finals to have a chance at an at-large bid. Otherwise, they probably need to win the CUSA tournament now.

Valparaiso: I never gave them much at-large consideration but there are some that do. Or did. The only good thing that came out of that bad loss was that I found out about the Horizon League’s streaming video for free. Some leagues (That’s you Atlantic Ten) need to take notice. FREE publicity is GOOD publicity.

Road to Selection Sunday for Feb 19

From 7-25 to the NCAA's in 4 years?

Welcome to the Road to Selection Sunday for Feb 19

News and Notes:

The Red Storm’s Kennedy has embraced his new role as “winner”.

The Vols will try to fend off the Bulldogs typically quick starts.

Freshman guard Atkins is taking care of the ball and leading the Irish like a veteran.

Roy Williams wants his big men to step up and demand the ball.

Washington’s Overton is back into the starting lineup for the injured Suggs.

The Wildcats know they need to outhustle the Huskies in tonight’s big game.

Colorado State’s four seniors who helped rebuild the program are making their final run at the NCAA tournament.

Lon Krugar took away the “UNLV” practice gear to make a point.

Cam Long almost left Mason as a sophomore.

Tonight’s game for the Gaels is suddenly a “must-win” game.

Utah State is trying to overcome their “soft” schedule and pick up a big win tonight.

Misery loves company when Izzo and Weber meet in East Lansing tonight.

Yesterday’s Winners:

Louisville: The Cards got a big sweep of the Huskies last night and now have a solid chance at the double bye in the Big East tournament. They still need a little help, but they hold the tiebreaker over UConn.

CAA: Two solid Bracketbuster wins for the 10th ranked conference could help them gain a third bid to the Big Dance. George Mason and Old Dominion can both make additional statements for the CAA this weekend.

Losers:

Connecticut: The Huskies just didn’t look that good last night. They struggled to score for the first 15 minutes and it didn’t really improve much after that. It seems that the way opponents are defending them is by taking away Walker and forcing the others to score. Walker needs to embrace that and keep feeding their new hot hand, Coombs-McDaniel.

Wichita State: Last night’s loss probably did in the Shockers at-large chances. It looks like the MVC will be a one-bid conference.

Can Walker regain his early season form?

Welcome to the Road to Selection Sunday for Feb 16

News and Notes:

Its preseason Big East POY against early season Big East POY when Freeman and Walker matchup in Hartford tonight.

The Badgers look to screen their way to open shots against the Boilers tonight.

The Boilers face back-to-back home tests that could get them back into running for the Big Ten regular season title.

Expect an ugly game tonight between the Cards and Bearcats in Cincinnati.

Sulking on the bench isn’t going to cut it for the Bearcats’ Gates.

Witherspoon is cleared to play tonight for the Memphis against UAB after missing five weeks.

Things are heating up for Bill Carmody at Northwestern.

The Illini know that they need to play harder against Michigan.

Could this be the Longhorns best defensive team under Barnes?

The Cowboys are 0-5 in Big 12 road games going into Austin tonight.

The Aztecs’ Tim Shelton might be the toughest player in college hoops.

Yesterday’s Winners:

George Mason: There’s no better mid-major team in the country right now. The CAA is ranked 10th among all conferences in the RPI and the Patriots are destroying the competition. They’ve won a school record 12 straight games by an average of almost 18 points per game, including ODU by 17 and VCU last night by 20 in Richmond. Get ready to see Mason get at least a 6 seed if they win out.

St. John’s: There aren’t many teams playing better than St. John’s over the past month. Solid road win in a game that Marquette had to have. With 8 Big East wins, the Redman, er Red Storm, are virtually ensured of returning to the Big Dance for the first time since 2002. That happens to be the same year as Steve Lavin’s last NCAA team at UCLA.

Virginia Tech: The Hokies helped their NCAA chances by holding serve at home and knocking out the Terps. There’s no way now that Maryland can get in ahead of them. They also need just 3 more wins to get to 10 and if they do that and win their opener in the ACC tourney, they’re in.

Gardner-Webb: The Runnin’ Bulldogs exposed Coastal Carolina for just a solid lower conference team. There were some media types who were beginning to talk up the Chanticleers, but it just takes a quick look at their results to know that they aren’t special. Mark Coastal Carolina down for the #15 seed in the East, probably playing Duke in Charlotte.

MVC: The Valley kept their hopes of being a multi-bid conference alive as both Wichita State and Missouri State won their games. They both have crucial Bracketbuster games coming up this weekend.

Jim Burr: The veteran official won me over with his wireless mike on the Michigan State-Ohio State telecast. Sixteen Final Fours and seven national championship games have been officiated by Burr.

Losers:

Michigan State: Sparty needs to win, whether it’s against Iowa or against Ohio State. The Hawkeyes provide their only “easy” game remaining as the other four pre-Big Ten tourney games are against at-large contenders.

Virginia Commonwealth: Back-to-back losses against in-state rivals ODU and George Mason might do in the Rams. I wouldn’t be so down on them if they didn’t lose by 20, but they did. Barring a five game winning streak with a close loss to Mason in the CAA finals, the Rams are now on the NIT watch list.

Maryland: Look for Maryland to host VCU in the opening round of the NIT after the Terps just got swept by a second ACC bubble team last night in Blacksburg. Maybe next year Gary and the Terps will actually take the 8 AAU teams off their schedule and play some of the local mid-majors. An 11-5 OOC record with quality wins and games would have the Terps in the middle of the bubble, not done. Five out of 15 doesn’t cut it, especially when the Winston-Salem AAU team is on their conference schedule twice.

Marquette: Here’s another team that hoped to skate through their OOC schedule and back into the Big Dance. Last night’s loss was a must-win and now the Warriors, er Golden Eagles, might have to win multiple games in MSG to have a chance. They went 0-4 against quality and 9-0 against the triple-digit RPI types. Blame your schedule maker when you’re hosting an opening round NIT game, Buzz.
